In a significant move highlighting the growing tension between corporate mandates and employee flexibility, **Antwerp-based employees** of Danish shipping giant **A.P. Møller-Maersk** have launched a strike. This industrial action is a direct response to the company's announcement that it will **end remote working arrangements worldwide by January 1, 2027**.

The dispute centers on the Belgian branch of the company, where approximately one hundred clerical staff members operate. Following the pandemic, these workers were granted the ability to work from home up to **three days a week**. However, Maersk’s new global policy aims to overhaul this system, requiring a return to full-time office presence. For many in Antwerp, this change is particularly burdensome due to severe **traffic congestion**, making a five-day commute logistically difficult and stressful.

### Union Pushback and Management Disconnect

**Joost Lestabel**, a representative for the socialist trade union **BBTK**, emphasized that while staff were willing to make concessions, a full five-day office requirement is unacceptable. "The staff were willing to make concessions, but five days is too much," Lestabel stated. He expressed frustration that local management in Antwerp has not acted as an ally to the workforce, instead aligning strictly with headquarters' directives.

A major point of contention is the company's stance on retention. Management has indicated that employees who refuse to return to the office may leave, suggesting such individuals would not possess the right **"Maersk DNA."** This comment has deeply irritated union representatives, who argue that Antwerp staff are highly productive and that their digital collaboration skills—often used with colleagues in Germany and Poland—render physical presence less critical for efficiency.

### Broader Implications for Remote Work

The strike serves as a microcosm of the broader debate surrounding **remote work policies** in multinational corporations. Employees argue that remote work is not merely a privilege but a proven benefit that enhances:
*   **Organizational efficiency**
*   **Work-life balance**
*   **Employee well-being**

While a spokesperson for Maersk confirmed they are aware of the strike and respect the right to protest, no further details regarding potential negotiations were provided. The union has scheduled additional actions, indicating that this conflict is likely to persist beyond the initial midday strike on Thursday.

This event underscores the challenges companies face when implementing uniform policies across diverse global locations, especially when those policies clash with local realities and established productivity norms.

Belgian employees of the Danish container shipping company A.P. Møller-Maersk are stopping work on Thursday morning. The workers are striking because the logistics company plans to cease its existing remote working arrangements worldwide from 1 January 2027, reports the socialist trade union BBTK.
