A 26-year-old remote worker earning ₹4 lakh per month in India has shared why he's planning to move to Australia despite his high salary. In a conversation with personal finance coach Anshuman Sharma on the *Fix Your Finance* show, Daniel revealed that his decision is driven by a lack of hope for the future in India.

**Key Highlights:**

- **High Income, Low Satisfaction:** Daniel earns $3,700 USD per month (around ₹4 lakh) working remotely for a US-based company. He spends ₹1.20 lakh monthly and saves the rest, but feels his money has no purpose.
- **Australia Plan:** He plans to apply for permanent residency by the end of the year and is saving aggressively for the move.
- **Why Leave India?** Daniel stated, "Who wants to stay in India? ... I don't see that there is any hope. I want to have a good future for my kids." He intends to keep the same remote job after relocating.
- **Coach's Perspective:** Anshuman Sharma echoed concerns about high taxes, cancelled exams, and rising costs, calling the desire to leave "a big epidemic."

**Financial Strategy:** Sharma advised Daniel to invest ₹1.5 lakh monthly in a recurring deposit to fund his PR application within 7 months.

This story highlights a growing trend among young Indian professionals: prioritizing quality of life and future opportunities over a high salary in their home country.

Trending News: A good salary is often considered the biggest sign of career success. But for many young professionals today, the bigger question is no longer how muc.

Earning ₹4 Lakh/Month in India but Still Moving to Australia: A Remote Worker's Bold Decision

Holiday planning in Australia has shifted away from fixed schedules and rigid bookings. Work patterns, family commitments, and lifestyle changes mean travellers expect plans to adapt when needed. **Flexibility is no longer a bonus feature in travel**—it is now a key factor shaping where people go, how they book, and how often they travel.

## Flexibility shapes booking decisions

Price remains important, but it no longer dominates travel decisions. Travellers increasingly check cancellation rules, date changes, and refund terms before they compare destinations or accommodation options. A cheaper booking with strict conditions is often less appealing than a slightly higher-priced option that allows changes.

This expectation for control extends beyond hotels and flights. Some travellers also look for tailored transport options when schedules are tight or unpredictable. Interest in private charter services has grown among those who value direct routing and adaptable timing, especially for business trips or complex itineraries.

## Remote work is reshaping holiday habits

Remote work has changed how Australians use their time off. Instead of concentrating travel into a single annual holiday, many people now mix short breaks with working periods in different locations.

A Sydney-based professional might spend part of the week working remotely from the Sunshine Coast, then extend the stay into a long weekend. These **blended work-and-travel patterns** make shorter, more frequent trips easier to manage and reduce reliance on traditional annual leave structures.

## Regional Australia is benefiting

This shift is supporting tourism outside Australia’s major cities. Coastal towns, wine regions, and rural destinations are seeing more regular visitation across the year, not just during peak holiday periods.

Areas such as regional New South Wales, Victoria’s wine country, and Queensland’s coastal hubs are benefiting from this steadier flow of visitors. Local operators are finding more consistent demand helps balance seasonal swings. Cafés, accommodation providers, and experience-based businesses are better able to plan staffing and services when tourism is spread more evenly across months rather than concentrated in holiday peaks.

## Booking policies are influencing destination choices

Travellers are increasingly factoring booking conditions into their decisions, and **flexible cancellation policies** and easy date changes can influence whether someone completes a reservation at all. Not long ago, changing arrangements often involved additional fees and lengthy conversations with customer service teams; today, people expect a smoother process.

This shift has changed how travel providers compete. Clear and simple booking terms often carry as much weight as price or location. Companies with rigid policies risk losing customers before the booking stage, while flexible terms can help reduce hesitation and increase conversions.

Technology has made travel planning faster and more transparent. Booking platforms now allow users to compare prices, reviews, and cancellation policies side by side. Many reservations can be adjusted in a few taps on a mobile device.

This ease of modification has raised expectations. Travellers now assume they will be able to manage changes themselves without lengthy calls or delays. As a result, businesses that clearly communicate their policies and make changes easy to complete tend to build more trust with customers.

## Shorter and more frequent trips are increasing

Travel patterns are shifting toward shorter, more regular breaks. Instead of saving leave for one extended holiday, many Australians now spread travel across the year through long weekends and short regional stays. This approach reduces planning pressure and makes it easier to fit travel around work and family life. It also encourages people to visit more destinations overall, rather than committing to a single major trip each year.

## Tourism operators adapt to new expectations

Across the industry, businesses are adjusting their offerings to match these changes. Flexible booking options are now commonly featured alongside pricing, location, and amenities in marketing materials. Airlines, hotels, and tour operators recognise that uncertainty is part of modern travel planning. Simple cancellation policies, straightforward changes, and transparent terms help reduce friction at the booking stage. For many providers, flexibility has become part of the baseline customer expectation rather than an added benefit.

**Custom travel options are creating new opportunities**

The demand for flexibility is also influencing how people think about travel design. Some travellers are exploring more customised itineraries or alternative transport arrangements when timing is important. These options are not mainstream for every traveler, but they reflect a broader preference for control over fixed schedules. Whether it is adjusting travel dates, changing destinations, or choosing bespoke transport solutions, the emphasis is on shaping travel around personal needs rather than adapting to rigid systems.

## The future of travel in Australia

Travel in Australia is becoming less about fixed plans and more about adaptable choices. People want the freedom to adjust their schedules, change their minds, and explore destinations without unnecessary friction. As expectations continue to evolve, **flexibility is moving from a competitive advantage to a standard requirement**. Businesses that make planning easier and more adaptable are better positioned to meet the needs of modern travellers, where certainty is rare but travel remains a constant priority.

How Remote Work is Revolutionizing Australian Travel: Flexibility Takes Center Stage

It’s sad but true: every good holiday has to come to an end. Before you know it, you’re back at work navigating spreadsheets and sitting in on endless calls. However, some Aussies have figured out how to extend their trips and stay in paradise just a bit longer – without having to take more leave.

Sydneysider Mark headed to Fiji with his wife and baby for what was meant to just be a short holiday – but quickly extended their stay. Thanks to Mark’s **flexible job in marketing**, and Fiji’s time zone being so similar to Australia’s, they were able to tack on extra time to their trip without him needing to lock in another week’s annual leave.

“Instead of cramming everything into five days, we got to slow down,” Mark told nine.com.au. “We had time to really enjoy Fiji, spend quality time together as a family and still keep up with work.”

Mark is one of many Australians taking advantage of flexible and remote work situations to turn idyllic holiday spots into their office. Trading your morning commute for a sunrise snorkel, your hurried lunch breaks into an hour by the pool, and having after-work cocktails out of a coconut... it sounds like the dream life.

“The biggest difference for me was what happened after work,” said Mark. “Instead of sitting in traffic on the commute home, I’d simply close my laptop and be straight at the pool with my family or watching the sunset on the beach.” “We’d have dinner together, engage in cultural activities around the resort and really make the most of being there.”

The rise of **‘bleisure’ (a blend of business and leisure) travel** is driven by an increase in more flexible jobs and is changing the way people take holidays. Far from being a distraction, **75 per cent of people who add holidays to their work trips say that it actually makes them more productive** when they sit down at their laptops.

Once upon a time, the ability to work from anywhere was just a perk for freelancers, but as more people embrace remote work post-COVID, the overseas workcation is becoming part of the norm. Mark said he told his boss and co-workers that he would be working from overseas. “As long as I was available for the important meetings, replied to emails and kept everything moving, there weren’t any concerns.”

More hotels are taking notice of the growing trend of bleisure travel. Director of Sales & Marketing at Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay Resort & Spa, Regina Wilson, told nine.com.au the hotel has intentionally created an environment to make this easier, with **high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the premises and comfortable work spaces** beyond guest rooms. “The rise of flexible work has given people the freedom to rethink how they travel,” she added.

Mark said he came back home feeling genuinely recharged instead of stressed, heading straight back into an overflowing inbox. “It made me question why we always feel like holidays have to fit into one week,” Mark said, who is already planning with his wife where they can go next.

Aussies have figured out how to extend their holidays without sacrificing annual leave.

## Journey into the Wilderness

I thought my car was big until I turned onto Fog Bay Road. I'm two hours south of Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory and this left turn has taken me into the wilderness of the Top End.

Suddenly everyone's driving a monster 4×4. The tyres have knobs on and there are cages in the truckbeds from which huge dogs eyeball me. They tow boats on trailers, carry sand plates, have winches on the front and jerry cans strapped to the roof. I can't tell if they're tourists in search of extreme adventure or just Top End residents popping to the shops.

I'm heading to the **Finniss River Lodge**. The further I travel, the more primitive it gets. For the saltwater crocodiles living in the tidal creeks, the land is much the same as it was for their ancestors, 200 million years ago: a sun-scorched, flood-drenched land where the red soil has been leached of nutrients for a quarter of a billion years and is mostly good for nothing but eucalyptus, sorghum and kangaroo grass.

What kind of madmen, desperados and dreamers, I'm wondering, would choose to live in a barren land full of dinosaurs where the two seasons are burning and drowning?

## Essential Information

**How to get there** Fly to Darwin and it's a two-hour drive south

**What does it cost?** One night's all-inclusive from £700pp

## Lodge Suites with Views of the Floodplain

Leo Venturin was one of the dreamers, an immigrant Italian builder who always fancied himself as a rancher. He is now 89, and his 50,000-acre cattle station is home to the Finniss River Lodge, offering all-inclusive luxury in a place where luxury usually counts as a patch of shade and a cold beer.

![Finniss River Lodge with an infinity pool and lounge chairs at dusk.](https://www.thetimes.com/imageserver/image/%2F6498da26-379c-4e9d-b280-42de89756055.jpg?crop=7839%2C4747%2C0%2C492&resize=780)

Finniss River Lodge has six en suite rooms

The lodge lies on the shore of a seasonal floodplain that drains into the Timor Sea 13 miles west. Clad in corrugated iron, it looks like a cattle shed, but with air-con, a pool and termite-proof hardwood floors. The six en suite rooms are as comfortable as you'll need but it's clear that the views over the floodplain are considered the most important feature.

At the right-hand end are a library, bar and restaurant but, once again, it's nature that's the star attraction. That the lodge manager, **Chase Johnson**, is also the Northern Territory's leading crocodile guide tells you pretty much all you need to know about this extraordinary spot. That her colleague Brad packs a Colt .45 on his hip suggests it's unlikely you'll find a pillow concierge and a signature fragrance at this particular five star.

"I only use it on feral pigs," he says of the automatic, explaining how the invasive swine threaten the habitats of 149 native species, spread leptospirosis to cattle and, by getting eaten, have helped drive the explosion in saltwater crocodile numbers from a few thousand in the 1980s to more than 100,000 today.

I want to see crocs but they want me to see cows, and that's how I come to be standing in a paddock with a bottle of South Australian sparkling wine and an Esky full of canapés surrounded by flies and a few dozen of the station's 5,000 tropically adapted Brahman cattle. I didn't realise, but it was a test.

![Chris Haslam in a Finniss River Lodge vehicle, surrounded by white cows.](https://www.thetimes.com/imageserver/image/%2Fd5bdb07a-e280-4875-a8ca-6e3892baf108.jpg?crop=1200%2C879%2C0%2C326&resize=780)

Chris Haslam meets a herd of tropically adapted cows

"We like to bring guests down to see the cows on their first afternoon," Chase says, elbowing a three-quarter-ton bull aside. "It gives us an idea of how they react around wildlife."

Raising cows in the tropics is agricultural masochism. The risk of bovine pestivirus, buffalo fly, blackleg disease, screwworm fly, tail rot, three-day sickness and a stack of other threats means the herd needs constant surveillance, and even a wire scratch or a fly bite is enough to see a cow rejected by the Asian markets in which they are sold.

Are the crocs a danger to the cows? "Yeah, we lose a lot," Brad says. "Where there's livestock there's dead stock."

Guests eat as well as the crocs here, with tiger prawn ceviche with pickled jalapeño, coconut and macadamia cream on that night's menu, followed by Cape Grim beef rib fillet with romesco and paperbark potatoes.

## Breakfast Served Between Termite Mounds

The next morning, an hour before dawn, we drive into a high-rise megacity with millions of inhabitants — their homes are like the fairy towers of Cappadoccia, or the temples of Bagan. They're **magnetic termite mounds**: 13ft slabs of baked earth orientated north-south to regulate the temperature. Look up the fascinating science of *Amitermanis meridionalis* before you go, though, so you can fully appreciate the surreal experience of eating a cooked breakfast between the towers as the sun rises above the mist.

Then we head to the beach. It's in a village called Dundee, which was obviously the inspiration for *Crocodile Dundee*.

"Nope," Chase says. "We named the place after the film." It's a pretty spot, with a boat ramp, a campsite, a pub and a long curve of palm-shaded sands with warm turquoise water that absolutely no one will even paddle in.

![Dundee Beach in the Northern Territory, Australia, featuring a sandy beach, palm trees, and reddish rocks along the coast.](https://www.thetimes.com/imageserver/image/%2F5ec36556-aa81-451f-a61b-84a2757a7b88.jpg?crop=6523%2C3936%2C485%2C736&resize=780)

Don't paddle at Dundee beach unless you want to risk meeting a crocodile

## Looking for Crocs

"There's a sure-fire way to check for crocs up here," Chase says. "You go up to the water, touch it and if it's wet there's a crocodile in it." Are there sharks too?

"Nah," Brad says. "Crocs ate all the sharks."

Last month, he says, a tourist had dashed into the pub to report a 15ft crocodile waiting by the petrol pump. "Tell him it's self-service," the barman said.

We don't see any crocs but we will this afternoon, Chase says. As we board the airboat after lunch I take a moment to assess my situation. Brad's got his .45, Chase has her bush hat and her cattle dog, and there's an Esky full of beer strapped to the deck. With wallabies in the paddock, black cockatoos overhead and mangroves full of crocodiles ahead, it strikes me that I may never see a better snapshot of life in the Top End.

![An airboat with passengers and a dog on the bow speeds across a river with lily pads and tall green grass on the banks.](https://www.thetimes.com/imageserver/image/%2Fb54e3034-ce3f-4c30-b24d-b86b73ec21a5.jpg?crop=4906%2C3180%2C1336%2C1448&resize=780)

Exploring on an airboat in the Northern Territory with guides from Finniss River Lodge

The floodplain feels primordial. It's exactly the kind of "warm shallow pond" identified by Darwin as the petri dish for the origin of life. At least a dozen species of dragonfly buzz back and forth like neon helicopters. Rainbow bee-eaters, lemon-bellied flyrobins, rose-collared doves and blue-winged kookaburras gave them a run for their money. There's a monitor lizard monitoring the bank and huge tarpon are breaking the surface to gulp air like they're thinking of making the move to dry land.

"Can you see the croc?" Chase asks. For a few moments I can't but then I see a yellow eye, the tip of a snout and a hint of a smile, just four feet away. Now I understand why there's steel safety fencing on the boat. "She's guarding her nest," Chase says. "We had a big thunderstorm two weeks ago and it's the lightning that triggers the girls to lay." She's still talking when the croc bursts from the water to lie upon her eggs.

The lodge's guides can help you get an up-close look at the crocodiles

The speed and the power are terrifying, and while you might think you could cover the same distance quicker, you probably can't — especially if it's taken you 20 seconds to spot an animal that's just a couple of arm's lengths away.

Meanwhile, Chase is talking to the 8ft croc in the same way a horse whisperer might speak to a spooked filly.

"She's still a small one," she says. "The girls stop growing at 10ft. The boys don't." The biggest-known male weighed nearly a ton and was 17ft long. His name was Sweetheart, his carcass is on display in Darwin's Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) and he was caught in Sweets Lagoon, three miles upstream from here.

That's a sobering thought, I say, glancing around the mangrove.

Chase opens the Esky. "Better have a beer, then."

## Mini-Guide to the Northern Territory

### Wildlife

![Cattle grazing in a field next to a large termite mound.](https://www.thetimes.com/imageserver/image/%2F65919dfb-126b-4b80-a519-c44bd7264a6b.jpg?crop=8007%2C5341%2C0%2C0&resize=780)

Besides the local cattle there's plenty of fascinating wildlife to see during the 12-night tour

The kaleidoscopic birdlife of the Northern Territory makes even the most seasoned British birder feel like a seven-year-old with a new pair of binos. The dazzling colours of species such as the gouldian finch, the rainbow pitta and azure kingfisher have evolved, ornithologists say, due to the colour-forming carotenoids in their diet and are used to communicate within their shady tropical habitat. But this 12-night group wildlife tour of the Top End offers more than birds. Other species include Antilopine wallaroos, possums, flying foxes, dingos and crocodiles, but it's the birdlife — and especially that of the Kakadu National Park — that will make you weak at the knees.

**Details** Thirteen nights' full board from £7,995pp, including flights, departing September 16, 2026 (naturetrek.co.uk)

### Culture

The capital, Darwin, is named after an English naturalist and the 39,000 square mile wilderness of Arnhem Land to the east is named after a Dutch ship, but now those who were here first are pushing back. The £30 million Larrakia Cultural Centre is under construction on Darwin Harbour, and curators worldwide, including those at Bristol Museum, are returning items taken from the Northern Territory's original inhabitants ahead of next September's opening. If you want to learn more about the world's oldest living culture, join an eight-day private tour of Arnhem Land and the Kakadu National Park. Guided by Davidson's Arnhemland Safaris, which works alongside the Amurdak people, you travel through the Kakadu National Park and across the East Alligator River into the Mikinj Valley, visiting aboriginal communities, hearing their stories and seeing their ancient rock paintings. Back in Darwin, you'll find entire buildings covered in astonishing 21st-century street art that continues a tradition dating back a staggering 50,000 years.

### Swims

It's unfortunate that this appears alongside a piece about crocodiles but be assured that many bodies of NT water are not infested with salties. In the Litchfield National Park, the West McDonnell Ranges, around Katherine and in the fabulous Kakadu National Park, you'll find shaded pools of cool, clear water, fed by waterfalls and surrounded by woodland where wild budgies roost. Indeed, the most sublimely chilled two hours of my recent visit was spent wallowing in a natural whirlpool bath beneath a rapid on the Florence Creek at Litchfield's Buley Rockhole — and such is the wealth of truly wild swimming experiences that Tourism Australia has developed an eight-day, waterhole-hopping road trip linking the best spots (australia.com). Guaranteed croc safe and no Dryrobe required.

**Details** Sixteen nights' self-catering camper-van trip from £2,249pp, including flights (trailfinders.com)

### Cruise

The Nitmiluk Gorge outside Katherine, three hours south of Darwin, is a wonder of the world. Not one but 13 gorges, this labyrinth of water and red-coloured sandstone has been home to the Jawoyn nation for 45,000 years. You'll see their art, along with freshwater crocodiles, water monitors and turtles, as you cruise upstream on day six of a ten-day Singapore, Darwin and the Ghan Expedition trip that starts with two nights in Singapore then three in Darwin before boarding luxury train the Ghan for three nights and then arriving in Adelaide.

Unleash Your Inner Adventurer: A Crocodile Safari in Australia's Wild Outback

Surfers, backpackers, and holidaymakers have been flocking to Australia’s pristine coastline for decades, yet in recent years, a new wave of visitors has arrived: **digital nomads**. Instead of surfboards, they bring their laptops and tend to stay much longer than your typical tourist. With a steady increase in **remote work**, the beach towns across Australia are starting to evolve into thriving hubs for location-independent professionals, who crave the balance of **productivity** and the **coastal lifestyle**.

From the creative energy of Byron Bay to the tranquil shores of Noosa, including the wild beauty of Western Australia’s Margaret River, these towns have started rebranding themselves as more than just a vacation destination. They have now become **workplaces of choice**. This shift has not only reshaped the local economies but has also influenced cultural and social landscapes. Why are Australia’s beach towns emerging as digital nomad hotspots?

## Australia’s Coast Lifestyle Appeals to Digital Nomads

Digital nomads have been flocking to Australia’s coastal towns for the undeniable **lifestyle appeal**, with over 25,000 kilometres of coastline. Endless opportunities for relaxation and adventure are offered in Australia, where you can balance your **work-life** with leisure, which only a few other destinations can offer. You will also read further down about the **high-speed internet access** that has been adopted in Australia, which is the vital infrastructure digital nomads require to do their daily business.

Towns like Byron Bay and Noosa have been placed firmly in the spotlight, as they provide both **professional flexibility** and **lifestyle quality**, showcasing how coastal living can redefine modern work culture. The warm weather, pristine beaches, and outdoor activities, such as surfing at Bondi, yoga on Byron Bay’s sands, or even a weekend hike through the Gold Coast hinterland, have made it the perfect place to integrate leisure with their work schedules.

The appealing, strong cafe culture and creative communities found in many of these coastal towns have digital nomads setting up their laptops in a beachfront cafe or coworking space, while still feeling connected to the vibrant local locations. The chance to live in an area where one is able to have early morning swims and enjoy late afternoon sunsets as part of their daily routine has far outweighed the drawbacks of urban office life.

## Reliable Infrastructure Is A Must-Have

Lifestyle appeal is simply not enough for digital nomads; **reliable infrastructure** is non-negotiable. As Australian beach towns have picked up on this trend quickly, they have adapted to the demands of remote professionals, providing **high-speed internet access**. This was once a challenge in regional areas, but it is now more accessible thanks to the rollout of the **National Broadband Network (NBN)**. This huge improvement has significantly boosted the viability of the smaller towns as work bases.

In Byron Bay and the Sunshine Coast, **coworking spaces** have multiplied, as these spaces often blend professional amenities with the laid-back atmosphere of the town, offering ergonomic workstations, meeting rooms, and networking opportunities in a more casual environment than traditional offices.

Local councils and tourism boards have increasingly been recognising the **economic value** that digital nomads bring, and have been supporting initiatives. Not only does this enhance the long-term visitor infrastructure, such as better transport links, but it also strengthens community events and housing options tailored for extended stays that have been put in place. Digital nomads are now able to enjoy all the perks of small-town living without having to compromise their professional needs.

## Coastal Communities Are Economically And Socially Impacted

With the surge of digital nomads into Australian beach towns, the local economies are being reshaped in visible and subtle ways. Short-term tourists usually stay for a few days, whereas with digital nomads, they often stay for weeks or even months, which has been contributing to a **steadier revenue stream** for accommodation providers, restaurants, and coworking spaces. Communities are cushioned by digital nomads, as they now avoid the **boom-and-bust cycle** of seasonal tourism.

With the rising demand for short-term rentals, the property markets are feeling the pressure, with some of the locals facing challenges in finding affordable housing. Global debates have been mirrored by this, and the impacts of digital nomads on local communities, where the benefits of economic growth must be balanced against the affordability and accessibility of long-term residents.

On the social side of things, digital nomads are helping to inject **diversity** into coastal towns, as they bring international perspectives and skills, which in turn enrich cultural exchanges and create opportunities for collaboration with the local entrepreneurs. Gaps are being bridged between locals and visiting nomads by events such as networking meet-ups, surf-and-work retreats, and cultural workshops, creating a more connected community.

## The Digital Nomads Hotspots

Several **Australian coastal destinations** have become particularly attractive to digital nomads, the leader of the pack being **Byron Bay**, which has been known for its bohemian spirit, thriving arts scene, and robust coworking ecosystem. The combination of natural beauty and entrepreneurial energy has made it a global magnet.

**Noosa** on the Sunshine Coast offers a more relaxed alternative, with the focus being on eco-friendly living, appealing to the professionals who enjoy the slower pace, while still being able to access quality amenities. Growing in popularity as well is **Surfers Paradise** and the **Gold Coast**, with their combination of urban convenience, nightlife, and expansive beaches.

**Margaret River** has also been attracting digital nomads who enjoy the fine wine country, surfing, and, of course, the natural scenery. For those seeking less crowded, more authentic coastal lifestyles, the smaller towns such as **Lennox Head** and **Yamba** have benefited. All these towns have collectively shown that **digital nomadism** in Australia is not confined to a single style, be it luxury, bohemian or just off-the-grid simplicity; there is a destination that will suit every preference.

## Australia, The New Global Work-And-Play Destination

With Australia’s coastal towns no longer being defined only by surfboards and sandy holidays, they have evolved into **global work-and-play destinations**, offering creativity, connection, and community involvement. Digital nomads have been drawn to the unique blend of infrastructure, lifestyle, and cultural exchange, which has transformed once-sleepy beach escapes into vibrant ecosystems that are supporting both **productivity** and **personal growth**. Ultimately, Australia’s beach towns stand as a shining example of how **location independence** can redefine what “the office” looks like.

If you've scrolled through social media recently, you've probably come across images of young Australians working remotely from idyllic locations—laptop in hand, life without borders. But this isn't just a fleeting trend; for many, it's the new norm.

**The Digital Native Phenomenon**

Born into the internet era, digital natives don't just use technology—they live it. For them, work isn't confined to an office; it's a series of tasks managed through apps and cloud systems. Flexibility and purpose drive their career choices, challenging traditional work paradigms.

**The Rise of Digital Nomads**

Digital nomadism has moved from the fringes to the mainstream, especially among Australians grappling with rising rents and stagnant wages. This lifestyle offers a blend of freedom and necessity, as many turn to remote work to navigate economic uncertainties.

**Stability vs. Freedom: The Great Divide**

The appeal of nomadic life is undeniable, but it's not without its challenges. Many young Australians still seek stability—steady income, super contributions, and long-term planning. This tension highlights the uneven distribution of opportunities, often influenced by socioeconomic factors.

**Technology's Role in Hybrid Work**

The pandemic accelerated the shift to remote work, making it a staple in many industries. However, true flexibility remains elusive for some, as hybrid roles often mimic traditional office structures under a new guise.

**Education and Skills in the Digital Age**

With traditional career paths no longer a guarantee, young Australians are turning to alternative education routes—boot camps, online courses, and self-taught skills—to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving job market.

**Addressing Inequality in the Digital Economy**

Not everyone has equal access to the digital economy. Regional Australians often face barriers like unreliable internet, while those from lower-income backgrounds may find themselves trapped in precarious gig work.

**The Path Forward**

The future of work isn't about choosing between being a digital native or a digital nomad. It's about creating a system that supports all workers, regardless of their chosen path. This means investing in education, infrastructure, and policies that reflect the realities of today's workforce.

If you have spent any time on social media lately, you’ve likely seen them — young Australians working remotely from tropical cafés, a laptop on their knees and a life that floats beyond borders....

Digital Natives vs. Digital Nomads: How Australian Youth Are Redefining the Future of Work

**How artists are rewriting the touring playbook from the ground up.**

As part of the wealth of knowledge shared at this year’s **Regional & Remote Music Summit**, the panel *DIY Or Die? Touring Regional & Remote Australia* cut straight to the reality of road-tested independence. Moderated by **APRA AMCOS**’ **Chris O’Neill**, the discussion brought together four working artists and industry operators deeply embedded in the grassroots: **Ashlyn Jada Koh**, **Matt “Magpie” Johnston**, **Jack Parsons**, and **Raechel Whitchurch** shared their careers' stories, jam-packed with seasoned advice.

### **“You are literally driving the bus”**

Magpie, a seasoned musician and festival organiser responsible for the Hunter Valley’s **Dashville**, nailed the tone early when he shared that despite his years in the game, he's still “stubbornly waiting for someone to draw up a stage plot” for his next gig. “I’ve done everything else,” he said. “I’m dragging the PA, talking to the venue, getting up to play… that’s the reality of being a musician.”

Jack Parsons, co-founder of **Guts Touring**, chimed in with a dry jab: “I was just thinking about how hard you’re gonna be gripping the mouse disappointedly when you’re doing that stage plot.” Parsons knows the grind well. Through Guts Touring, he’s led multiple regional and remote circuits that defy the traditional pub-to-club touring logic. “We’re doing less regional now and more fully remote stuff,” he explained. “That seemed to be the most memorable. We fundraise, so they’re free shows. We take the risk out of it, because counting pennies was getting a bit tough.”

### **Community As The Engine**

Ashlyn Jada Koh, an entrepreneur working extensively across the West Kimberley region, offered a more nuanced view of regional engagement, one rooted in cultural exchange and relationship-building. Her touring often includes community workshops, often co-led by local artists, in places such as Broome, Derby, and Fitzroy Crossing. “I think I’ve worked backwards,” she explained. “I have, like, workshops or shows and performances in communities and have a local person be a part of it to deliver and facilitate that workshop as well. It's just building relationships.”

### **The Ethics of Exploits**

Whitchurch, who also runs a touring agency, didn’t shy away from industry critique. In her early twenties, she witnessed how easily agents and promoters could exploit regional venues — driving up artist fees, knowing full well that the shows wouldn’t recoup their costs. “I do think that, if you're good at your job, you are in a position where you probably are able to exploit people, if that makes sense. Because that's our entire job - exploiting demand to create opportunities for our artists,” she says, clarifying that the semantics of exploit aren’t necessarily only negative.

### **The Long Haul (Literally)**

Logistics aren’t just a hurdle; they’re often the deciding factor. Getting from Brisbane to Darwin, for instance, is no quick hop — it’s a multi-day drive with real financial weight. Spare tyres, water, gear redundancy, and even basic reception can be unreliable or nonexistent. “You’ve got to call people,” Jack insisted, reminding a grimacing audience of the existence of landlines. “Pick up the phone. You can’t email your way out of this one; you’ve just got to call.”

### **Localised Loyalty**

Another standout thread was how regional audiences differ from their metro counterparts — not just in size, but in loyalty and etiquette. “Metro fans can be a little fickle,” Raechel said. “In regional and remote areas, you work harder to win them over, but once you do? They’re yours for life.”

### **Payoff & Purpose**

Magpie put it plainly: “Given the choice between Sydney or Dungog, I’ll take Dungog every time.” He spoke about his work with the Dashville Bowlo and building community through performance - even in towns that, frankly, didn’t always know what to do with him at first.

### **Leaving Advice: How to Prep**

Asked for practical tips for artists considering their first regional or remote tour, the panellists didn’t sugarcoat it. “Use your connections,” Ashlyn said. “Ask questions. People will tell you what you need to know.” “Accept that it’s part of the job,” said Jack. “You just gotta do it. It’s good for you. You get better. You get to hang out.” “Be the change,” Magpie said, simply. “Touring regionally adds to the culture. You don’t have to play the big rooms. Just play the good ones.”

The Untold Truth of Touring Regional & Remote Australia: DIY or Die?

A recent **national audit** has unveiled that many bush communities in Australia are still without **mobile phone and internet coverage**, even as the country rapidly digitizes everyday tasks.

### Current State of Connectivity
The **Closing the Digital Divide project** reports that **half of the 1,505 remote Aboriginal communities** lack mobile phone coverage. This situation poses significant challenges for residents who need online access for **banking, government services,** and **employment opportunities**.

Despite these challenges, the audit reveals a positive trend: the percentage of people with internet access has risen from **74% in 2022 to 86%**. Lead researcher **Daniel Featherstone** notes that while there are advancements like **wi-fi mesh networks**, many residents still rely solely on mobile phones.

### Barriers to Digital Inclusion
The **rising cost of living** has been identified as a significant barrier, with **73% of respondents** admitting to cutting back on essentials to afford connectivity. The **digital divide** highlights the stark contrast between those with the resources to access the internet and those without, particularly affecting remote Aboriginal communities.

### Emergency Situations and Digital Access
The lack of reliable telecommunications can be dangerous. Reports to the federal government indicate that **emergency calls** cannot be made when connectivity fails, posing serious risks to safety. The **Torres Shire Council** has emphasized the urgent need to address this issue.

### Proposed Solutions
In response, the federal government is launching the **First Nations Digital Inclusion Roadmap**, which outlines a long-term strategy to improve connectivity. This plan includes **30 recommendations** aimed at enhancing **training, expanding public wi-fi**, and improving the resilience of communication infrastructure.

These days, just about everything is being done online. But new research highlights how hard that's making life for thousands of Australians still living without phone and internet.

Bridging the Digital Divide: Thousands of Australians in Remote Areas Still Lack Internet Access

## Internet Access Improves in Remote Communities
A new report highlights that **internet access** in Australia's **remote and very remote communities** has improved over the past two years, thanks to enhanced **4G, Wi-Fi, and satellite infrastructure** across regional Australia.

The **Mapping the Digital Gap** report led by RMIT University reveals a **12% increase** in internet access and an **18% increase** in regular internet usage. However, despite these improvements, **cost** remains a significant barrier to greater digital inclusion.

## Affordability Challenges
More than **two-thirds** of First Nations people surveyed struggle to afford internet services, with over **half** of the communities still lacking mobile access.
- Nearly **70%** of respondents have made sacrifices or cut back on essential costs to afford the internet, a rise from **40%** in 2022.
- **99%** of mobile phone users rely on **prepaid credit**, as low and unreliable incomes limit access to better value monthly plans.
- Out of **1,505** remote communities, about **796** still lack mobile services.

## Progress Towards Digital Inclusion
RMIT researchers have been mapping digital inclusion in remote First Nations communities for three years. Lead investigator **Dr. Daniel Featherstone** noted that while the gap is narrowing, **inequalities** persist.
- A **6% increase** in regular internet users has been observed since 2022, with **over 60%** of those surveyed using the internet several times a day.
- However, **14%** of individuals still do not use the internet, and many areas experience slow and unreliable services.
- The introduction of **free Wi-Fi hotspots** and **mesh networks** has played a crucial role in improving access, with a **31% increase** in public Wi-Fi usage.
- Collaborations with companies like **Telstra** and **Starlink** are providing essential connectivity.

## Engaging Online Despite Barriers
More First Nations people are now engaging online with music, videos, and games, with a **17% increase** since 2022. High social media usage connects families, while online banking and shopping have also seen growth. However, a **19% drop** in computer ownership has limited opportunities for learning.
- Challenges such as lack of identification, low email usage, and concerns about **cyber-safety** hinder further online engagement.
