About the role:

We are seeking a highly capable evaluation consultant with strong quantitative expertise and a proven track record delivering outcome and impact evaluations. You will combine analytical rigour with consultancy agility, bringing experience from a research, evaluation or consulting environment and a practical understanding of how to balance methodological excellence with client needs, budgets and timelines.


You will lead the design and delivery of evaluations, applying quantitative, mixed-method and, ideally, economic analysis approaches to assess program effectiveness, outcomes, impacts. Working across diverse client portfolios, you will be comfortable managing competing priorities, delivering high-quality outputs to tight deadlines, and mentoring junior team members.


Beyond technical delivery, you will play an active role in client relationship management, proposal development and the continued growth of Verian's evaluation practice. We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate a strong portfolio of evaluations involving quantitative analysis, contribution analysis, impact assessment and outcome evaluation, and who can clearly articulate their role in the design, delivery and reporting of these projects.


Key responsibilities:


Evaluation Design and Delivery

  • Design and apply robust mixed-methods evaluation designs
  • Lead quantitative workstreams including outcome measurement and impact assessment.
  • Critically assess program contribution including value generated from public investment.
  • Translate complex evidence into clear recommendations and decision-support products for senior stakeholders.


Business Development

  • Lead and contribute to competitive tenders and proposals.
  • Develop compelling methodologies that balance technical rigour with client needs, timelines and budgets.
  • Support the growth of Verian's evaluation and impact assessment practice.


Leading projects

  • Manage client relationship throughout the project, leading discussions on approach, progress and client impact. Able to independently develop all materials required for data collection and brief the project team to ensure everyone understands the client’s needs and their role in the project.
  • Manages any issues through the project finding solutions and where necessary advising the Leadership Team of any potential impacts on the business.


Analysis and Reporting

  • Can independently prepare a full report for complex projects including development of the ‘story’, implications and conclusions that address the client’s objectives
  • Able to create and deliver a concise and engaging presentation demonstrating insight against client objectives.


Team Leadership

  • Mentor and develop quantitative and evaluation staff.
  • Provide technical oversight and quality assurance across project teams.
  • Build capability in advanced evaluation methods and analytical techniques.


Role capabilities:

  • Strong expertise in quantitative and mixed-method evaluation design, including outcome, impact and contribution-focused evaluations.
  • Ability to apply appropriate evaluation frameworks, theories of change and analytical approaches to address complex policy and program questions.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to synthesise evidence and draw clear, defensible conclusions.
  • Excellent written, presentation and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, competing priorities and tight deadlines.
  • Strong commercial acumen, including budget management, profitability and business development.
  • Experience mentoring and developing junior staff and contributing to a collaborative team culture.


About You:

  • 7+ years' experience delivering evaluations within a consulting, research or professional services environment
  • Demonstrated experience delivering outcome, impact and contribution-focused evaluations.
  • Strong quantitative research and analytical skills, including statistical analysis and interpretation of complex data.
  • Experience designing and delivering mixed-method evaluations
  • Experience working in a consulting, research or professional services environment.
  • Economic evaluation, cost-benefit, cost-effectiveness or value-for-money experience is highly desirable.
  • Strong report writing, presentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality work within tight timeframes.
  • Experience contributing to proposals, tenders and business development activities.
  • Proven ability to build trusted client relationships and mentor junior staff.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in evaluation, economics, statistics, social sciences, public policy or a related discipline.
