Role Purpose
SMM is expanding its global research, price assessment and industry intelligence capabilities. This role will build Australia-based coverage and local industry networks across metals, mining, critical minerals and related supply chains. The role will provide high-quality market insights, develop proprietary information sources, deliver credible price assessments where relevant, and strengthen SMM's professional voice in the Australian and global metals community.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain a proprietary network of senior contacts across Australia's lithium, iron ore, aluminium, coal and broader metals and mining value chains.
- Engage regularly with industry participants through calls, online meetings and interviews to capture first-hand intelligence on production, shipments, pricing sentiment and operational changes.
- Produce daily and weekly price assessments or benchmarks for selected Australian mineral and metal products, subject to SMM's methodology and compliance requirements.
- Apply transparent, consistent and auditable assessment processes aligned with IOSCO principles where relevant, and explain pricing rationale to market participants.
- Build mine-level cost curves, supply-demand scenario models and analytical frameworks for priority Australian commodities.
- Analyze the impact of policy, regulation, technology disruption, energy transition and geopolitical factors on Australian commodity markets.
- Author market outlooks, thematic reports, strategic commentaries and analytical notes with sufficient rigor to be referenced by industry participants, media and financial institutions.
- Represent SMM at selected industry conferences, expert panels, client briefings and market roundtables.
- Partner with SMM research teams on cross-regional projects, data interpretation and methodology alignment.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in metals, mining, resources, commodities research, price reporting, market intelligence, consulting or a related field.
- Strong understanding of Australia's resources sector and relevant industry networks.
- Ability to produce clear, insightful and market-relevant research in English.
- Experience in one or more priority areas such as lithium, iron ore, aluminium, bauxite, coal, nickel, copper, rare earths, cobalt or other critical minerals.
- Experience in price assessment, benchmark methodology, market reporting or commodity data products is highly preferred.
- Strong self-management capability in a remote working environment.
- Comfortable collaborating with cross-border teams, especially across Australia, China and broader Asia.
- Willingness to attend industry meetings, conferences and occasional business travel.

- Based in Perth or Sydney.
- Prior experience with mining companies, commodity intelligence providers, consulting firms, investment research, industry associations or trading companies.
- Public speaking, client presentation or published research experience.
- Understanding of China-related demand, trade flows or supply chain dynamics.
