This role is an Australia-based, fully work-from-home position, with access to co-working spaces in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Job Description The Payroll function is critical to the organisation. Reporting to the Head of Finance, the Payroll Manager ensures that this process runs smoothly and is completed with a high level of accuracy, while ensuring compliance with the relevant tax and employment laws and regulations. Key Responsibilities

  • Payroll Processing:
  • Ensure the accurate and timely processing and reconciliation of employee timesheets and salaries.
  • Ensure all payroll adjustments and changes are processed on time and accurately, minimising backpay and corrections.
  • Ensure all employee changes, including new hires, compensation and time changes, and terminations, are processed accurately.
  • Ensure payslips are compliant and shared in a timely manner.
  • Maintain and update employee payroll data in the payroll system.
  • Ensure accurate balances for leave balances, superannuation and other employee benefits.
  • Work closely with the People and Finance Team to ensure alignment between payroll and HR records.
  • Ensure managers and employees are educated and compliant with payroll needs for the prompt and effective processing of pay.
  • Ensure relevant audits, checks and balances are conducted on an appropriate schedule to ensure that employees are set up appropriately with respect to awards, contracts, accruals, deductions etc.
  • Minimise employee overpayments and manage repayment schedules where required.
  • Compliance and reporting:
  • Prepare and process all State and Federal tax obligations, including PAYG tax, Payroll tax, Workcover and Superannuation Guarantee contributions.
  • Ensure timely and accurate submission of tax payments to relevant authorities.
  • Stay updated on relevant awards, legislation, and regulations pertaining to payroll to ensure compliance.
  • Assist in annual reporting requirements with the ATO.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee records in the payroll system.
  • Regularly file and archive payroll information, ensuring data security and accessibility.
  • Payroll Enquiries:
  • Address general payroll inquiries from employees, providing guidance on pay interpretation and procedures.
  • Resolve payroll-related issues promptly and efficiently.
  • Continuous Improvement:
  • Review Payroll configuration and make changes as required to reduce risk, improve efficiency and automation and drive more effective reporting and reconciliation.
  • Partner with Finance and People teams in the testing and implementation of payroll impacting system upgrades and improvements.
  • Review payroll impacting processes and practices reduce risk of error or non-compliance with simplifying payroll practices for payroll, finance and the business.
  • People Leadership
  • Lead a high-performing team by providing clear leadership, direction and support to employees, ensuring they have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities.
  • Promote the empowerment and growth of staff by providing mentorship, coaching, and professional development opportunities to team members.
  • Delegate responsibilities effectively and manage team performance to achieve individual and departmental goals.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in managing payroll processes for a large and diverse workforce (ideally 500+ employees).
  • In-depth knowledge of Australian payroll legislation and a solid understanding of multiple awards and enterprise agreements.
  • Strong technical understanding & experience using Employment Hero.
  • Ability to manage multiple payrolls, ensuring accuracy and compliance across different employee groups.
  • A strong understanding of tax compliance, superannuation, and other regulatory requirements related to payroll.
  • Experience with end-to-end payroll processing, including but not limited to pay runs, adjustments, leave entitlements, and statutory reporting.
  • A track record of working in a remote environment, with strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive employee data with discretion.
