MEDirect is a market-leading Australian scale-up building Report Studio, our AI-powered medico-legal report assistant, and we’re looking for a Full Stack Engineer to work across product, platform, APIs, and integrations as we scale.

This is a broad, hands-on role for an engineer who can move confidently across frontend, backend, Azure infrastructure, and integration workflows. You’ll work on customer-facing product features, backend services, internal tooling, and complex API chains — helping us build reliable systems in a fast-moving, high-value environment.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys variety, takes ownership, and can combine speed with sound engineering judgement. We’re looking for someone who is adaptable, technically strong, and comfortable operating in a scale-up where priorities can shift and the highest-value work may move from sprint to sprint.

About the role

This is a hands-on full stack engineering role with strong commercial relevance and a meaningful integration focus.

One sprint might involve building React features in Report Studio. Another might focus on backend services, Azure Functions, internal dashboards, or migration work. Another might involve tracing issues across multiple APIs, reviewing request and response payloads, resolving contract mismatches, and improving integration reliability across internal and third-party systems.

We value engineers who are adaptable, delivery-focused, and comfortable moving to the highest-leverage problem in front of them.

You will report to Andy Waugh, our Head of Engineering, and work closely with our Head of Product, AI, and operations teams across the business.

What you’ll be doing

• Build and maintain product features across frontend and backend
• Own feature delivery end-to-end, from technical design through implementation, testing, and release
• Build and consume APIs with a strong focus on clean contracts, maintainability, and integration reliability
• Work through multi-step API chains to diagnose issues, assess fault responses, inspect payloads, and identify root causes
• Help establish and protect sources of truth across systems and integrations
• Develop backend services and workflows using modern engineering patterns
• Build frontend features and interfaces that support customer-facing and internal product workflows
• Work across Azure services, including Container Apps, Functions, SQL, storage, and related platform services
• Contribute to internal productivity tools, workflow automation, reporting solutions, and migration support
• Improve system reliability, observability, and operational confidence across deployed services and integrations
• Write unit and integration tests and contribute to disciplined CI/CD and release practices
• Participate in code reviews and work within established engineering standards
• Collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders to translate changing business requirements into pragmatic technical solutions

What you’ll bring

• Solid full stack engineering experience, with confidence working across backend and frontend
• Demonstrated ability to own a feature end to end
• Strong hands-on experience with Azure, especially:
• Azure Container Apps
• Azure Functions
• Azure SQL
• and the broader Azure ecosystem
• Strong demonstrated experience building and consuming APIs
• Practical experience with:
• dissecting multiple API chains
• diagnosing fault responses
• evaluating request and response payloads
• identifying integration issues and contract mismatches
• guarding sources of truth across systems
• Confidence working with SQL and application data
• Comfort operating in a fast-moving, adaptable, agile scale-up environment
• Strong judgement about when to build fast and when to build properly
• A practical mindset, strong initiative, and willingness to take ownership
• Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively across product, engineering, AI, and operations teams

Technical profile

We would expect strength across a meaningful combination of the following:

• Frontend development with React, TypeScript, and modern UI/data tooling
• Backend service development using Python, FastAPI, Django, Node.js, or similar frameworks
• API design, integration patterns, and service communication
• Azure cloud services and deployment workflows
• SQL and data modelling
• Debugging and operational support across distributed systems
• Testing, CI/CD, and production delivery practices
• Containerised and serverless application delivery

Nice to have

• Experience with FastAPI, Django, or Django REST Framework
• Experience with ETL, migration, or integration-heavy delivery
• Familiarity with Azure services such as Blob Storage, Cosmos DB, API Management, or Data Factory
• Experience integrating with Azure AI, OpenAI APIs, or adjacent AI services
• Experience in healthcare, legal, insurance, or other regulated-data environments
• Background building internal business tools, workflow systems, or reporting platforms
• Exposure to observability, logging, and production diagnostics in cloud environments
