The Opportunity
We are seeking a Founding Head of Accounting to build and lead Maggie’s accounting function from the ground up, serving our network of independent insurance brokers across Australia.
This is a hands-on, client-facing leadership role for an experienced insurance accounting professional who wants to design the systems, controls and reporting frameworks that help brokers operate with confidence and compliance under Maggie’s AFSL.
You will start as an individual contributor, directly supporting out-of-network brokers with bookkeeping, trust reconciliation, BAS/IAS lodgements, and financial reporting. Over time, this role will evolve into a leadership position overseeing a growing onshore and offshore accounting team.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and manage Maggie’s accounting and trust reconciliation operating framework
- Provide bookkeeping, payroll, BAS/IAS lodgements and financial reporting services to brokers
- Support brokers with compliance and financial record keeping under the AFSL
- Recruit, train and manage a growing onshore and offshore accounting team
- Act as a Responsible Manager for Maggie’s AFSL
Required Qualifications and Experience
- CA or CPA qualification
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in Australia within the general insurance industry, ideally with a broker, underwriting agency or AFSL holder
- Hands-on experience in bookkeeping/payroll, trust reconciliation, BAS/IAS lodgements and financial reporting
- Proven practical knowledge of retail and wholesale general insurance products and distribution models
- Experience leading accounting teams and building scalable offshore functions
- Familiarity with broker operating platforms such as WinBEAT and Javelin
- Proven ability to leverage AI tools to improve reporting accuracy and efficiency
- Exceptionally strong communication, organization, strategic planning, and leadership skills
Role Details
- Fully remote role, open to candidates based anywhere in Australia
- Initial engagement of approximately two days per week
- Pathway to full-time employment and equity as the business scales
- Opportunity to shape the strategic direction of the accounting department
- Reports directly to the Founder
